It’s finally here; our first refresh project is complete on the Owner’s Suite! So here’s the thing, I’m on this decorating journey and the one thing that I instantly realized early on is that I lacked color! Like as if I ran from the hues…. apparently! For some reason, I just naturally gravitated to neutrals and white, as you can see in our bedroom prior to the refresh. It’s funny because when I went through all of my mood boards, inspiration pins on pinterest, my favorite items saved with all of my favorite retailers, all of the arrangements (although nice) were very sterile. I had a “come to Jesus” moment with myself and said, Toya you’ve got to explore the hues.
So I did! Now how did I settle on blush as the prominent color for the refresh? Well that was process all by itself. I took a look at the trendy colors…. blue, emerald, purple, orange, pink, blush, etc. I had just incorporated blue in the Great Room, so I didn’t want to carry that through the Owner’s Suite as well. I then thought about purple…. color of royalty, Allen’s frat color lol and so on, but when I started to loosely put some concepts together with purple, I was immediately overwhelmed. It was too dark of a color to move forward with in my bedroom, my place of serenity.
So I started to think about softer colors, teal and blush. Allen wasn’t a fan of the teal, so blush it was! I secretly wanted blush anyway, but I wasn’t sure if Allen would think it was too feminine and dominant our room. He was fine with it! So all I needed to do is start a business to get Allen onboard with blush, should have done this along time ago, lol!
First, I knew we were going to do an accent wall, and initially we were looking at wallpaper, the peel and stick options are rather easy to install and there are lots of modern patterns and styles to choose from. We have taupe gray walls, so the accent wall had to be lighter to draw some contrast. We did find some wallpaper options that we liked, but we didn’t LOVE them. I didn’t want to settle, because the accent wall is the focal point for the room. I researched accent walls and fell in love with wall grid patterns, the square style. A white wall grid just seemed like a natural fit, since we were incorporating blush accents.
I found a few good tutorials on how to build and sketch out the squares based upon the size of the wall, but the one I used primarily was by Welch Design Studio. Now in full disclosure, we initially had intentions to complete the wall ourselves, but both Allen and I work full-time corporate jobs, we’re just starting to ramp up on client projects and we have two toddlers with one on the way, needless to say, we were up against the clock! So we purchased all of the materials, sketched out the drawing and hired our general contractor Dan to install. The boards are actually 1×3 MDF boards that are already primed. They are pretty inexpensive and we purchased them from Home Depot.
We initially had a ceiling fan light fixture in the room, but wanted something that was more prominent, and because we’re going into the fall/winter with a newborn expecting to arrive in the winter, we didn’t think we would miss the ceiling fan right now. I choose a geometric chandelier from one of our faves, Wayfair. The lamps, are also from Wayfair. We did go with taller lamps this time since our nightstands sit very low, for more balance.
We initially had a beige bench in front of our bed, but decided to change the arrangement with two accent chairs. From the moment I saw these wingback chairs from Wayfair, I fell in love!
I am a big fan of the Hotel Collection by Macy’s; honestly all of my bedding for the Owner’s Suite has been by the Hotel Collection. This particular comforter is called the Fresco. I was drawn to the geometric pattern, the color and of course the quality. To accompany the comforter, we also purchased the small blush decorative pillows along with the quilted European shams, all by the Hotel Collection.
The small black and gold side table came from another one of my faves, TOV. It’s obviously eclectic and “not boring”, which I love. I also purchased the beige ottomans from TOV, but they are not new or apart of the refresh.
So my to-go for pillows is Z Gallerie, for sure. I purchased the larger accent pillows for the chairs from Z Gallerie as well as the smaller blush pillows, rose quartz stands and blush throw. The blush area rug actually came from Home Depot, I have to admit, Home Depot is also one of my faves, do not sleep on Home Depot! We have this same area rug in our dining room in white. It feels great! The kids and guests always lay on this area rug, true story!
I am on the mind to layer the smaller accessories, once the bigger items are in place, that way, you can holistically see what’s missing to set off the room and make it complete. We needed to add a little more color on the accent wall to balance out the blush, so I purchased the canvas wall art on the accent wall and in the corner next to the windows from Home Goods. I also purchased the curtain panels from Home Goods. I went through several iterations of panels that I didn’t like before arriving at these curtains. Allen got a good workout in replacing them all, lol. Oh and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my cute little gold wall mirror that I found from Target, isn’t it just the cutest!
We started working on this Owner’s Suite refresh project in August and it was complete by late September, so I would say it took us about 4 to 5 weeks to complete (start to finish).
Our initial budget was $2000, not including labor and we came in at roughly $3300 (including labor for the accent wall).
I am very pleased at the outcome, especially since this is just our first refresh project. Our room was cozy and inviting before and even more so now and the kids love the rug! I would rate this a B+ (I’m a Virgo, a perfectionist and hard grader), there’s always room for improvement and ways to elevate.
Now on to our guest bedroom project, we’re scaling fast, so stay tune for the next refresh in late October. Please let us know what you think? What should we have done differently? What you liked, etc.?
Until next time!
