Out of all the exciting changes that are happening this year and next year, two things are for sure. First, we’re putting our building plans on hold due to a likely possibility of a work relocation in 2022. Second, we’re going on a home hunt (one of the things I’m really excited about!) and we’re making sure to steer clear of box homes, one of the non-negotiables for our new dream home.
You have probably seen one, passed by one (or live in one). My definition of box homes is these square-shaped properties with very little land and space. To developers’ and builders’ credit, I understand their building model. Their goal is to maximize the land they own to build as many homes as they can in a subdivision to maximize profit. I get it. But we’re finally done with them.
We understand that as important it is to know what we don’t want, having a list of what we want to see in our next home can also come in handy. As we’re jumpstarting our home search within the year, we made a list of the non-negotiables for our future dream property.
Space
A sprawling yard isn’t just a treat to the eye. An adequate space – probably an acre or more – will allow us to get creative with our property. A larger area can accommodate bigger floor plans such as having at least 6 bedrooms or more, a pool, an accessory dwelling for a guesthouse, etc.
Dual Two-Story Staircase in the Foyer
To be welcomed by a stunning foyer with dual staircases – that is luxe. Dual two-story staircases are like the stamp of elegance to all kinds of home decor themes. I love how I can change the design and decor of the home as much as I can without sacrificing elegance – the staircases will already ensure that.
White Aesthetics
White cabinets, immaculately white countertops, a crisp white wall – are just some aspects that I’m sure will elevate the aesthetics of the home. Having the touch of white does make a home look well put together, and classy! Not to mention white aesthetics stand the test of time in the most beautiful way!
Character
I always say finding a home is like falling in love. Looks may catch the eye, but it’s the character that really seals the deal. Our family loves homes with character – we always keep an eye out on unique features that make us go “Yes, that’s a House of Smith Interiors detail right there!”
Gated and Grand Landscape
There’s a special way to make guests feel welcomed even before they reach the front door – through grand landscaping. This non-negotiable made it on our list because having an accommodating exterior is just as essential as having a welcoming interior.
These non-negotiables, plus all the interior decorating ideas running through my mind just make me so excited for our 2022 hunt! Can’t wait to turn that house into a home!
How about you? What are your non-negotiables?
Xoxo, Latoya Smith
