Great Room Decor

So it’s been a long time coming to find the right decor solution for our great room. It’s not every day you find a newer home without a fireplace, but we’ll leave it to the previous owner to be unique! So we are left with this unique space, where the bottom half is indented and the top half comes out several inches.

We always knew we would do something with this bare wall to accessorize it, give it more character and of course most importantly to lighten up the space!

Allen and I initially thought we would put in an electric fireplace in the Great Room, and surround it with white stone mosaic tile that matches the tile in the kitchen. We soon realized that would be a cumbersome project to install the fireplace and we would need to add additional drywall to frame around it, so we eliminated that idea.

The second idea was to add a textured white wallpaper to the bottom half with artwork on the top half.

We did incorporate the artwork above but we didn’t think the wallpaper itself would give a dramatic factor…. at least not the wow factor we were going for! So we thought about adding a panel grid wall on the top half and leave the bottom half as-is. That didn’t make the cut either.

Finally, we thought the shelving units are a great way to organize the great room décor and have the aesthetic that we were going for.

Like many companies, Closets by Design offer several types of paneling and styles…. from their Everyday Collection (i.e. basic) to the Brio Collection (most premium). Of course, you are limited to what’s customizable going with the Everyday Collection. So, we chose the Classic Collection which was stylish and featured soft edge panel treatments. We also added the door faces (the designs in the doors) to give it a more elegant look. Crown molding at the base to the ceiling was a must-have. To Allen’s credit, we added the puck lighting with the light valence to give the shelves a more dramatic effect. And boy did it! Especially at night, the lighting is everything.

So, I know you’re wondering, what do custom units like this cost?

For us, the final cost was $6800. To provide a little more context, the units are roughly 108 inches tall and 22.75 inches wide, each.

It was well worth the investment. We highly recommend Closets by Design and if you like how we accessorized the shelves, you can shop the post below.

You’re welcome! – Xoxo Latoya Smith
